These calls generally all follow a similar format, often starting out as an automated or prerecorded message telling you that your auto warranty or is about to expire. Usually, these calls come from someone posing as a representative of your car dealership, manufacturer, or insurer. They might even have some information about your car, such as the vehicle year, make, or model.
Protection Against These Calls
Whether the call pertains to an extended warranty or something else entirely, federal law provides strong protections for consumers against unsolicited robocalls. These calls provide seemingly never-ending invasions of your privacy. The relevant federal statute is called the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).
For each violation of the TCPA, the caller is liable for a statutory penalty of $500.00. Importantly, if it is found that the caller knowingly violated the TCPA by making the robocalls, they can be liable for up to $1,500.00 per violation.
